Interested in Ordained Ministry? The Diocese of Christchurch encourages vocations to the ordained ministry and facilitates training and education pathways for those selected for ordination. One path involves residential study and formation at a recognised theological institution, for instance St John's College in Auckland. On the Bishop's recommendation, an ordinand may be awarded a scholarship to St John's, leading to a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Theology through Otago University or Auckland University. An alternative path to ordained ministry allows candidates to study and prepare part-time in Christchurch. Our preferred university for distance education is Otago, and their courses can be studied via distance learning, with audio conference classes held at Theology House, 30 Church Lane, Merivale, Christchurch. Part-time ordinands may be required to commit to a mentoring programme within the Diocese. This involves at least 10 hours' practical ministry per week under the supervision of an experienced priest who has been nominated by the Bishop. All local ordinands are encouraged to attend occasional courses and programmes run by Theology House. A wide range of papers in theology and ministry also is available through the Ecumenical Institute for Distance Theological Studies (EIDTS). The Director of Education for the Diocese of Christchurch, Rev Dr Peter Carrell (also Director of Theology House) and the Archdeacon for Mission, John Day have roles in the discernment, education and formation of candidates for ministry, ordained or otherwise. Archdeacon John Day is co-ordinator of the diocesan discernment weekends (one or two held each year). You are free to contact either Peter Carrell or John Day or Bishop Victoria Matthews personally with your enquiry re the vocation of priest or deacon in the Church.
